The Los Angeles Dodgers retain a key member of the World Series.

Tommy Edman has agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $74 million, the team announced Friday. According to The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaia, the deal includes $25 million in deferred money that will be paid over 10 years.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to a five-year, $74 million contract extension with IF/OF Tommy Edman through the 2029 season with a club option for the 2030 season.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan outlined some of the details of the deal:

The deal runs from 2025 to 2029 with a club option for 2030. Edman will receive a $17 million signing bonus and the deal will include deferred money, according to Passan.

Edman was traded to the Dodgers at the 2024 trade deadline after spending the entire season on the injured list. He signed a two-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals ahead of the 2024 season.

He returned to the field on August 19 and hit .237/.294/.417 with six home runs and 33 RBIs. He appeared in center field as well as shortstop and second base during the regular season.

He carried his best into the postseason, hitting .294 with two doubles, two stolen bases and an RBI in the World Series. His NLCS was even better: he hit .407 with 11 hits, 11 RBIs and three doubles and was named NLCS MVP.

He could fill multiple roles for the Dodgers in the future and allow the team to have some position insurance as they continue to be a major player in free agency. His on-field experience could soften the blow of Teoscar Hernandez’s possible departure, and his on-field experience could help the health of Mookie Betts, Gavin Lux and Miguel Rojas.
