Green federal building once ridiculed by President-elect Trump dedicated to Nancy Pelosi

Green federal building once ridiculed by President-elect Trump dedicated to Nancy Pelosi

An 18-story California government building that President-elect Trump once called “one of the ugliest buildings” in San Francisco will be formally dedicated next week to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The San Francisco Federal Building, a 234-foot-tall building located in the area south of Market, was renamed “Speaker Nancy Pelosi Federal Building” last year, and the top Democrat will be on hand to unveil the new sign at a ceremony on Monday, Bay City reports. News. The building was named after Pelosi in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, a $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill.

The energy-efficient green building opened in 2007 at a cost of $144 million. It consists of V-shaped stainless steel panels at the top that fold over a wide concrete frame. It is designed to consume one-third the energy of a typical California office building, use natural light to illuminate 80% of the building, and create a healthy environment for employees.

It was the first federal building in the United States to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. This is an internationally recognized rating system that measures the sustainability of a building.

The building houses Pelosi’s offices, as well as the Social Security Administration, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Labor, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture, according to the General Services Administration (GSA), which operates the building.

“The shape and orientation of the building maximizes natural airflow for cooling and ventilation, while also allowing for natural daylight in most office interiors,” according to the GSA website.

Although it is praised for its energy efficiency, its gray and dreary appearance has divided opinion, especially since it sits across from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, a Beaux Arts masterpiece on Seventh Street.

In 2020, then-President Trump issued an executive order called “Make Federal Buildings Beautiful Again,” promoting beautiful federal civil architecture, which called the building a poor design.

“The GSA has selected an architect to design the San Francisco federal building who describes his designs as “art for art’s sake” architecture intended primarily for architects. Although elite architects praised the resulting building, many San Franciscans consider it one of the ugliest structures in their city,” the decree states.

The order was revoked by President Biden in February 2021.

Last year, workers raised concerns about the safety of entering and exiting the building due to an increase in the number of drug dealers and homeless people congregating near the building, the San Francisco Standard reported last year.

The publication cited an Aug. 4, 2023, memo written by the head of the Department of Health and Human Services that said safety concerns had become so severe that workers were advised to consider working from home. In the block where the building is located, 525 drug-related cases were recorded over 12 months, the publication writes, citing city data.

Pelosi was elected to Congress in 1987 and is one of the Democratic Party’s highest-ranking leaders and the only woman to serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives. She represents California’s 12th Congressional District, covering most of the city of San Francisco. During her second term as Speaker, the House impeached President-elect Trump twice, but he was acquitted by the Senate both times.
