Jim Goodwin won’t allow complacency at Dundee United

Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin insists no one at Tannadice will rest on their laurels despite a superb start to the season.

Fourth-placed Terrors moved level on points with Rangers with a 2-0 win over St Mirren at Tannadice.

Kevin Holt scored a penalty in the 79th minute and then conceded one in stoppage time after St Mirren’s Marcus Fraser was red carded.

However, Emmanuel Adegboyega sealed the victory with his second goal from a corner.

And Goodwin admitted he was glad to see his team “win ugly.”

The manager said: “Kev got the first goal well and then I was glad we got a second goal from a corner after the second one was saved.

“Kevin’s penalty record since he’s been here and since he’s been at Partick Thistle has been excellent.

“Louis Moult was in the squad and wanted to take him – they all want to take him. They could have given him that, but we’re just glad it didn’t cost us.

“We’re very happy with the scoreline, there wasn’t much going on in the game and it was a bit of a mess. But sometimes you have to win ugly.

“We’ve played St Mirren three times and kept three clean sheets, which is a testament to the defensive players because they put a lot of pressure on us.

“It’s very difficult for teams to play against them, not many teams play well against them – and I mean that as a compliment to them.

“So you have to stand up and they did it heroically.

“That’s a huge three points. We had a very encouraging start to the season, but nothing more.

“No one is complacent here, it’s still November and that message is constantly being drilled into the players and staff.”

Buddy boss Stephen Robinson insisted Fraser should not have been shown a red card after he collided with Moult for United’s second penalty.

“Sometimes things don’t go your way and the game changes after a penalty,” Robinson said.

“I cannot conclude this for the first time from the angle that I saw.

“As for the second case, if we send people off for this, I don’t think it’s like a fine.

“If it’s a red card, then it’s game… you decide.

“I don’t think Dundee United thought it was a penalty either.

“It was kept so we wouldn’t lose the game.

“I can only be interested in what we can control.

“However, we can have more control over our final pass or final decision.

“That’s the only thing I’m worried about and will work on.”
