Ilya Likhtenstein is an entrepreneur and cryptocurrency investor. who was born in Russia before moving to the USA.

Heather Morgan, Lichtenstein’s wife, business owner and columnist.. She also used the pseudonym Razzlehan as part of her rap career.

In 2016, Ilya Lichtenstein hacked the virtual currency exchange Bitfinex and stole about 120,000 bitcoins, which was worth about $70 million at the time of the theft.

He laundered the cryptocurrency with Morgan’s help.

Following the theft, the couple “employed numerous sophisticated money laundering techniques, including using fictitious names to create online accounts,” according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

The statement continues: “(Using) computer programs to automate transactions; depositing stolen funds into accounts on various darknet markets and cryptocurrency exchanges, and then withdrawing funds; converting bitcoins into other forms of cryptocurrency in a practice known as “chain hopping”. ‘.

“Contributing part of the proceeds of crime to cryptocurrency mixing services; the use of business accounts in the United States to legalize the banking activities of Liechtenstein and Morgan; and exchanging part of the stolen funds for gold coins.”

Accessed November 15, 2024 Ilya Lichtenstein was sentenced to five years in prison in the United States for laundering stolen cryptocurrency.

He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder money and carrying out hacking.

Lichtenstein has been in prison since his arrest in February 2022 and has taken “full responsibility” for his crimes, telling Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly that he wants to “make amends in any way possible.”

Morgan, meanwhile, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. She was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
